Smishing Attacks Are Getting Smarter. Here’s How to Protect Your Business

Smishing attacks are becoming more realistic and far more dangerous than they used to be.

If you are not familiar with the term, smishing is phishing that happens through text messages. Instead of fake emails, attackers send SMS messages designed to trick you into clicking a link, entering login credentials, or sharing credit card information.

In the past, these messages were easy to spot. Poor grammar, suspicious phone numbers, and obvious fake links made them stand out. Today, that is no longer the case.

Modern smishing attacks use far more sophisticated tactics.

Scammers now commonly:

  • Use your real name so the message feels personal and legitimate

  • Include links that look authentic and often use HTTPS, meaning the padlock icon no longer guarantees safety

  • Time messages around real-world events like tax season, missed deliveries, or bank alerts

  • Prompt users to download fake apps or call fraudulent support numbers that sound official

These messages are designed to create urgency. The goal is to push you into acting before you have time to think.

The safest approach is simple: never click a link in a text message, even if it appears urgent or familiar.

If you are concerned about a bank account, delivery, or service alert, open the official app directly or manually type the company’s website into your browser. If there is a real issue, it will be visible once you log in securely.

For businesses, smishing is more than a personal risk. One compromised credential can expose email systems, financial data, or customer information. Training staff to recognize these attacks and having proper security controls in place is critical.

At WildFrog Systems, we help businesses reduce risk through security awareness training, endpoint protection, and layered cybersecurity strategies that evolve as threats do.
